EAST HARTFORD -- — Frank McCoy has been managing the Vernon Orioles for about 30 years, but he never won a Greater Hartford Twilight League playoff title. Until Thursday. Vernon scored seven runs in the sixth inning, six off Newington Capitols ace Jason Schuberth, for an 8-5 victory at McKenna Field and the playoff championship. ``It's been a great season,'' McCoy said. ``We've got a great bunch of young kids here who like to play ball. They don't give up and keep coming back.'' With Vernon trailing 3-0 in the sixth, No. 9 hitter Mike Griffeth hit a two-run single to right. Scott Bikowski's single to left tied the score before another two-run hit, by Jack Champagne. ``I was just trying to make contact,'' said Champagne, who was 4- for-5 with three RBI. ``He made a good pitch, an off- speed pitch low and outside, and I just tried to put my bat on it.'' Scott Martin came in to retire the next two batters before allowing a triple to right by Steve Rembisz that scored Champagne. Rembisz scored on Ray Bull's single to left. Erik Nord allowed 12 hits for the victory as Newington twice left the bases loaded. ``Nord showed a lot of courage out there,'' McCoy said. ``We made a couple of missed plays that made those innings long for him.'' Vernon got its final run in the seventh. Keith Millen led off with a single and later scored on Champagne's single to center. ``I really thought we'd come back and win two straight, but it's nice to see a class act like Frank McCoy win it,'' Newington manager Dave Sacco said. ``They beat the best pitcher in the league with his rest. He's got a good young team.'' Vernon had also defeated Newington 2-1 Monday in the double- elimination tournament with runs in the sixth and seventh. ``That was the key,'' Sacco said. Newington took a 3-0 lead in the home third. Brian Marshall, who had three homers and nine RBI Wednesday against Herb's, and Kevin Beaudoin had back-to-back singles with the bases loaded. Jason Maule walked to force in Scott Cormier with the third run. The Capitols got their final two in the sixth when Mike Mangiafico (3- for-4) scored on Marshall's single to left and Cormier scored on an error. ``We'll try to celebrate a little now,'' McCoy said.
